Peggy's Story

When her breast cancer required surgery for a double mastectomy, Peggy McDonnell opted to stay local.

A double mastectomy is a complex surgery; after learning she would require surgery, McDonnell was initially concerned she would have to travel to Spokane or Seattle to receive care.

McDonnell was referred to Pullman Surgical Associates, a member of the Pullman Regional Hospital Clinic Network, where she met with Dr. Visger. “Every person I spoke with recommended Pullman Surgical Associates—it was wonderful reassurance I could receive this type of care so close to home,” says McDonnell.

“I can describe my whole experience with Dr. John Visger and Pullman Regional Hospital with one word – competence,” recalls McDonnell. "I was treated with compassion and given the information I needed to understand my situation. My cancer diagnosis left me with many questions and an uncertain path. I felt reassured and more confident after just my first visit with Dr. Visger.”

Due to the nature and complexity of her surgery, McDonnell needed to stay overnight at Pullman Regional Hospital, which she remembers as being a remarkable experience. “Everyone I encountered was so professional and caring! I knew that I was in very capable hands, and that surely helped with my healing.”

For follow-up care, McDonnell met with Dr. Nancy Panko, another surgeon at Pullman Surgical Associates. McDonnell left her appointments feeling reassured and informed. “She, like Dr. Visger, took the time to answer questions and provide the guidance I needed.”

"Because of the competence of many, I’m back enjoying my life and living cancer free,” says McDonnell.
