Attend the Joint Replacement Preparation Class
We provide comprehensive patient education to those considering or scheduled for joint replacement surgery. Whether your surgery has already been scheduled or you’re just starting to look into getting a joint replaced, attending the monthly Joint Replacement Preparation Class or watching the online webinar is highly recommended. The class will teach you how to prepare for your surgery to achieve the best outcome, and what you can expect after surgery and during rehabilitation. View the Joint Replacement class flyer to find a date to attend the in-person class, or simply click on the image below to watch the class online.
Begin Pre-Physical Therapy
We know working out is probably the last thing you feel like doing with your painful joint; however, being in the best shape possible before surgery will set you up for a more successful outcome and easier recovery. Physical therapy before surgery will help you improve your range of motion and build strength, which will make it easier to get up and down stairs, in and out of your car, and up out of bed during your recovery. Since joint replacements are a chronic condition and not usually an emergency surgery, you will have plenty of time to build your strength and get in better shape prior to surgery. Additionally, if you have a disease such as diabetes, pre-physical therapy exercises will help take your blood sugar down and keep it under better control, and might help you lose extra weight and improve post-operative surgical outcomes. Ask your primary physician for a referral to Summit Therapy and Health Services or your hometown physical therapist.
Fill out your Pre-Op Health Questionnaire
On the same day you see you orthopedic surgeon for your pre-operative appointment, you will have a pre-operative appointment at the hospital. Your hospital pre-operative appointment will take place at Same Day Services at Pullman Regional Hospital, and will cover all of the important information about your upcoming surgery. You can expect this appointment to last up to 2 to 3 hours. One way you can save time and make your appointment shorter is by filling out the Pre-Op Health Questionnaire before you get there. This four-page document will ask about your medical history, your family's history, medications, and allergies, eliminating the need for a doctor to go over each individual question with you during the appointment. If you have any questions about the questionnaire, please contact the pre-op nurse at (509) 336-7570.
Be a Partner in Your Success
The Orthopedic Care Team doesn’t just involve your doctors, nurses, and therapists… it involves YOU! While our staff promises to do everything we can to ensure your total joint success, what you do matters just as much. Attend the preparation class, do your best to get in shape prior to surgery, follow your doctor’s orders, and never hesitate to ask questions.
