PULLMAN, Wash. – Last August, Washington State Athletics and Pullman Regional Hospital entered into a four-year agreement to provide premium healthcare services to Cougar student-athletes.

The partnership with PRH includes expanded services for WSU student-athletes, including:

    · Year-round, on-campus clinics with expanded hours

    · Increased physicians for event coverage

    · Former student-athletes access to continued care with same physician who treated them while enrolled at WSU

    · Opportunity for WSU's Elson S Floyd College of Medicine/Pullman Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency to gain experience in the sports medicine field

    · Oversight of student-athlete healthcare services through Dr. Ed Tingstad as Medical Director

As part of the agreement, PRH staff are housed in WSU Athletic facilities to provide optimum care, including The WSU Champions Center, which celebrated its grand opening on February 19, 2025. The Champions Center houses academic resources for student-athletes, including advising, tutoring, meeting and study spaces, as well as professional development services and mental health counseling.

Recently hired by Pullman Regional Hospital, Josh Clein, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, and Justin Martel, PhD Clinical Psychologist, will see student-athletes at the Champions Center.

Here is an overview of the PRH staff working directly with WSU student-athletes.

    Josh Clein, LICSW

Josh grew up in Memphis, TN, then moved to Indiana for college. He has experience as a private practice therapist in inpatient and outpatient behavioral health settings, and most recently, as Primary Counselor for the Young Adult Mental Health Program at Ascension St. Vincent Stress Center in Indianapolis, IN.

"In this role, I'm truly combining my passion for athletics and passion for counseling. I have a lot of compassion and empathy for college-aged students, especially student-athletes, as they navigate adulthood, life changes, and independence," says Josh. "My philosophy of care is to provide many informed therapeutic approaches and treatments tailored to the individual to create care plans that work best for each person."

Josh has expertise in managing personality disorders, navigating healthy relationships, behavior tracking, assertive communication, and boundary setting.

    Justin Martel, PdD, Clinical Psychologist

Justin was a student-athlete at Sacred Heart University, where he was an offensive lineman on the football team. His senior year, he worked with a sports psychologist. "That was a transformational experience for me, it

really opened my eyes to what I could do with my psychology degree and is ultimately the reason I took the career path I did," says Justin.

"I'm passionate about helping erase the stigma around seeking out mental health services, especially for male athletes. It's such a high need," says Justin. "I compare my philosophy of care to riding in a car with a patient. They're in the driver's seat, steering the wheel, and I'm in the passenger's seat, riding along. I occasionally hand them a roadmap or make a suggestion on direction, but ultimately they're the one who knows where they want to go."

Justin earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Applied Psychology from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Sports Psychology and Counseling Specialty from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.

Josh and Justin join a larger healthcare team dedicated to WSU student-athletes, who are also Pullman Regional Hospital physicians.

Jesse Shaw, DO, Sports Medicine Physician

Jesse Shaw, DO, Sports Medicine Physician, was hired by Pullman Regional Hospital in January of 2024. He serves as a Team Physician for WSU Athletics, caring for student-athletes on campus, at the request of athletic trainers and during games.

Dr. Shaw is a member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He is also an Associate Professor in the College of Graduate Studies- Sports Medicine/Performance at the University of Western States in Portland, OR, where he most recently practiced before moving to Pullman, WA.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology/Psychology at Juniata College in Huntington, PA and attended Medical School at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA, earning a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a family medicine residency at St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Auburn, AL. He received a post-graduate certification in Sports Management at New York University.

Dr. Shaw is drawn to the Sports Medicine field because he likes to work with his hands and fix problems and injuries. He wants his patients to know they shouldn’t delay care. “People should seek care as soon as their functionality is impacted. Delaying care only makes the road to recovery longer.”

Michael Osterholt, MD, Sports Medicine Physician

Michael Osterholt, MD, Sports Medicine Physician, joined Pullman Regional Hospital in October of 2024. He serves as a Team Physician for WSU Athletics, caring for student-athletes on campus, at the request of athletic trainers and during games.

Dr. Osterholt is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, and American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He has experience working with athletes at a variety of levels including, University of Nebraska student-athletes, Creighton University student-athletes, team physician for the College World Series, Omaha Lancers USHL Hockey Team, and Rapid City Youth Boxing.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Physiology at the University of Wyoming and attended Medical School at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Services, earning a Doctorate of Medicine. He completed a family medicine residency at Rapid City Family Medicine and a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Osterholt likes the Sports Medicine field because he enjoys fixing problems and injuries. He wants his patients to know that his goal is to get down to the crux of their problem and be realistic and supportive about how they can get better through personalized care plan development. “I truly enjoy sports medicine because I have the opportunity to help people across all activity levels stay active and functional and continue to do the things they love,” says Dr. Osterholt.

Both Drs. Shaw and Osterholt also see patients for Sports Medicine-related injury diagnosis and treatment at Inland Orthopaedics of Pullman.

Ed Tingstad, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. Ed Tingstad, Orthopedic Surgeon with Inland Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Clinic, was named the inaugural Medical Director of WSU student-athlete healthcare in July of 2024, when Pullman Regional and WSU Athletics signed a four-year partnership agreement.

Dr. Tingstad served as the solo WSU Team Physician for many years and has been a practicing orthopedic surgeon on the Palouse since 2000. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He graduated medical school and completed a clinical fellowship in Sports Medicine from the University of Washington, and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

He is a clinical instructor for the WWAMI Program at the University of Washington School of Medicine and was named WSU College of Education’s inaugural Champion for Sport and Health in 2019.
