5 Ways to Prepare for Your Joint Replacement Surgery

Written by Priya Hazari | Sep 27, 2018 8:09:37 PM
You’ve dealt with the pain for far too long and finally decided to schedule your joint replacement surgery. Now what? Preparing for a total joint surgery can be overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to help! Here are five simple ways to set yourself up for total joint success.

1.Meet Maile, Orthopedic Care Coordinator

Pullman Regional Hospital is unique in that we have a dedicated Orthopedic Care Coordinator to help guide you through the process of your total joint surgery – from start to finish. As soon as your appointment for surgery is scheduled, Maile is available to answer any questions you have, remind you of important tips to remember before surgery, help coordinate your post-surgery care options, and so much more. With more than 20 years of experience taking care of total joint replacement patients, you'll be in good hands with Maile.

 2. Attend the Joint Replacement Preparation Class

We provide comprehensive patient education to those considering or scheduled for joint replacement surgery.  Whether your surgery has already been scheduled or you’re just starting to look into getting a joint replaced, watching the online webinar is highly recommended. The class will teach you how to prepare for your surgery to achieve the best outcome, and what you can expect after surgery and during rehabilitation.  Simply click on the image below to watch the class online.

3.Begin Pre-Physical Therapy

We know working out is probably the last thing you feel like doing with your painful joint; however, being in the best shape possible before surgery will set you up for a more successful outcome and easier recovery. Physical therapy before surgery will help you improve your range of motion and build strength, which will make it easier to get up and down stairs, in and out of your car, and up out of bed during your recovery. Since joint replacements are a chronic condition and not usually an emergency surgery, you will have plenty of time to build your strength and get in better shape prior to surgery. Additionally, if you have a disease such as diabetes, pre-physical therapy exercises will help take your blood sugar down and keep it under better control, and might help you lose extra weight and improve post-operative surgical outcomes. Ask your primary physician for a referral to Summit Therapy and Health Services or your hometown physical therapist.

4. Be a Partner in Your Success

The Orthopedic Care Team doesn’t just involve your doctors, nurses, and therapists… it involves YOU! While our staff promises to do everything we can to ensure your total joint success, what you do matters just as much. Attend the preparation class, do your best to get in shape prior to surgery, follow your doctor’s orders, and never hesitate to ask questions.
